Original South Island Landscape Paintings
South Island’s backcountry is dramatic with pointy peaks and vast areas of uninhabited space.
I don’t paint photos … I paint a story from what I observe (usually by bike) using colour and texture. If you look closer, you’ll notice characters in my works.
These paintings are larger. They finish off a room beautifully, but they also serve as a precious memory of your favourite place and its wildlife. They are sometimes commissioned, where people can have the scene that has most meaning to them.
Soft Coastlines and Beautiful Wading Birds
Coastal estuaries are dramatic and story-rich too, but in soft ways. Think tidal rhythm, curvy channels and beautiful light.
These paintings are mostly about the wading birds. They’re fun and quirky, and I’m probably best known for these works.
About my Process
I use thick paint applied with a knife, like butter on a scone. But you will find soft, thin layers too.
I like to produce from scratch, and all by hand – source, cut, prepare my own canvas and boards. ‘Himself’ makes the lovely frames using solid New Zealand timber.
This process is hugely time consuming. But it produces bespoke works of art that I love to make, and people are collecting.
